We have 1 ferret and 1 guinea pig (and several other pets but my question
concerns these 2) that I have kept apart so far. Can ferrets and guinea
pigs get along? I'm wondering if I could let them play together or if they
would fight if they were in the same place for any period of time (like a
playpen).

This reminds me of an incident described by an acquaintance at work. His
sister had a pet hamster. One day a friend brought over a pet ferret to
show off. The sister immediately brought out her hamster so they could
"play together". She put the hamster on the floor near the ferret. In a
split second, before anyone could even move, the ferret pounced on the
hamster and killed it. A bad ending despite the best intentions.

Most of the people here know how fast a ferret can move when they want to,
either to excape a cat or pounce on a rodent or bird. Their reflexes and
dash speed are truly amazing. The moral of the story is, keep you guinea
pig safely away from your ferret. - CW

The ferret would in all probablity kill the guinea pig within a very
short time .

Ferrets may be cute and freindly but they are natural killers of small
rodents , rabbits etc

We had a rat wander into our kitchen and go between the kitchen units
sent in snowy our smallest ferret within thirty seconds the rats spinal
chord was severed and its throat / juggular ripped out .

This same ferret would sit around my neck ,play and snuggle in with the
german sheppeards etc etc

That's what I thought and why they have been kept carefully apart. I just
wanted to make sure I was correct.

I, too have guinea pigs, along with ferrets and various other 'kids'.
Ferrets and Guinea Pigs will not fight, the Ferret will chase and attack the
Pigs. So far my Ferrets have only riden on the Pigs, when I"ve forgotten to
close the Pigs in. As predators, I would imagine Ferrets would normally try
to kill and eat the Pigs.
