Hello
I have had a female ferret for about 4-5 years. She is a gorgeous, happy, spoilt ferret. However I decided that she should have a ferret friend to play with, so I purchased a baby male ferret.
Firstly, I am allergic to this new male ferret - but I am not allergic to my existing female! How can that possibly be!? How can a person be allergic to a male of a certain species but not a female of the same species??
Secondly, the little boy STINKS. My little female is very clean. She is perfectly toilet trained, has regular baths and clean bedding, etc. She has very little smell at all (other than her litter tray!). I am astounded at how badly the new male STINKS. I have washed him several times (but weeks apart to avoid over-stimulating the oil glands) and it makes little to no difference. I feel like I cant handle him at all because he just smells so badly. Is this likely to be alleviated at all by desexing?? He is only 12 weeks old currently.
Furthmore, his excrement also stinks unbelievably. My female has a smelly bum, but if she happens to have had a little accident around the house in the past, it isnt a big deal. Her urine doesn't smell hardly at all. But, again, his stinks!! If he wees anywhere it nearly makes me sick having to clean it up. I had always been under the impression that ferret urine had no smell! But this is terrible!! I dont know what to do.
Does anyone have any feedback or experience that might help me?
